For most guys brain health isn’t something we start thinking about until we begin to have small lapses in memory, attention or mental performance.
It’s common to forget someone’s name or the name of a movie, but what about when it’s a close friend, or a movie that you’ve known for a long time?
I’ve noticed these annoying and slightly embarrassing lapses happening more frequently since turning 40…not so much that I’m concerned about my cognitive health right now, but enough to make me wonder what’s happening and what the future may have in store for me in regards to brain health and cognitive abilities.
It’s no secret that our brains change and our mental faculties can slow down as we age. The point of this series of articles is to understand why, and what we can do to delay or avoid the negative effects of aging on our brains.
If you’ve read any of my other series you’ll know that I take a 3-pronged approach to optimizing any aspect of your health and performance.
Identify current disease or dysfunction and estimate your risk of future disease or dysfunction for the specific system (i.e. brain health).
Improve the overall health of the system we’re focused on.
Optimize performance.
This series will follow the same framework:
In Phase 1 we’ll focus on the most common neurodegenerative problems affecting aging men in the U.S. These are diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia.
We’ll discuss what they are, how to screen for them and determine future risk, and what we can do to avoid or delay their onset.
In Phase 2 we’ll discuss the most effective science-driven approaches to improve your overall brain health.
A few examples include:
Sleep enhancement
Stress reduction
Fitness and exercise
Nutrition
Mental and emotional health
Supplementation
My goal with this series is to give you actionable tools and strategies you can use to safeguard your brain health, prevent disease and stay sharp as you age.
